Citrus Saves the Day!

The Citrus Impact on History

In the annals of maritime history, the 1700s were a time of exploration, discovery, and unfortunately, scurvy.  This dreaded disease, caused by a deficiency of vitamin C, was the bane of sailors on long voyages. Killing more sailors than all the sea battles combined, between Columbus and 1900, two million sailors died of this dreaded disease.  The cure, as it turned out, was as simple as it was surprising: citrus fruits.  So, how did citrus save sailors from scurvy and what are the many health benefits of these favorite fruits.

Scurvy: The Sailor's Nightmare

Scurvy was a common and deadly disease among sailors during the Age of Exploration.  Symptoms included anemia, exhaustion, spontaneous bleeding, pain in the limbs, and eventually death.  The cause of scurvy was unknown at the time, but on long sea voyages with limited fresh food, outbreaks were devastating.

The Citrus Solution

The breakthrough came in 1747 when a British naval surgeon named James Lind conducted one of the first recorded clinical trials. He divided sailors with scurvy into six groups, each receiving a different treatment.  The group that showed the most improvement were those given oranges and lemons. Lind had discovered the cure for scurvy - citrus.  But it would be 200 years till the cause was fully understood.

The British Navy quickly adopted Lind's findings. They began carrying lemons, and later limes, on their ships, earning British sailors the nickname "limeys." The incidence of scurvy dropped dramatically, giving the British Navy a significant advantage in the long sea battles of the time.

The Health Benefits of Citrus

The power of citrus to combat scurvy comes from its high content of vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid. But the health benefits of citrus isn’t limited to vitamin C. These fruits are packed with a host of other nutrients that contribute to health and wellness.

  1. Rich in Vitamins and Minerals: Citrus fruits are an excellent source of vitamin C, but they also contain vitamins A and the B complex and minerals potassium, folate, and thiamine.
  1. Citrus fruits are packed with Antioxidants: which help protect the body from harmful free radicals. This can help slow down the aging process and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease. One group of antioxidants are flavonoids. There are 90 different flavonoids in citrus fruit! Not just color and flavor but a long list of health benefits.
  1. High in Fiber: Citrus fruits are high in dietary fiber, which aids in digestion, helps control blood sugar levels, and lowers the risk of heart disease.
  1. Boosts Immune System: The vitamin C in citrus fruits plays a crucial role in boosting the immune system, helping your body fight off infections.

The story of sailors and scurvy in the 1700s is a testament to the power of citrus fruits. These zesty, juicy fruits not only saved countless lives at sea but continue to contribute to our health and wellness today. So next time you enjoy a refreshing orange or squeeze a lemon into your water, remember the humble citrus fruit's heroic history and impressive health benefits.
